Safety shoes, a commitment to sustainability

Is it possible to contribute from the safety and protection shoes industry to take care of our planet? If we want to take care of the future of humanity, every day it becomes more important and urgent to seek strategies to preserve the environment and contribute to its recovery and maintenance. The fashion industry is one of the most polluting and wasteful industries in the world. It produces around 92 million tons of waste every year… That’s a truly alarming figure! However, there are ways to reduce the environmental impact of both companies and consumers. For that reason, and because we firmly believe that we can all help save our planet, we at Croydon will tell you how we maintain a commitment to sustainability in the design and manufacturing process of our safety and protective shoes.

Challenges of safety shoes in terms of sustainability

The impact of the fashion and apparel industry, which includes the footwear industry, consists mainly of:

  1. The intensive use of natural resources, such as water, energy and raw materials.
  2. Water and soil pollution from chemicals such as solvents and dyes.
  3. Greenhouse gas or CO2 emissions from the transportation of raw materials, garment production and distribution.
  4. The generation of waste and residues due to the mass production of textiles and hyper-consumption by buyers.

Now, if we talk specifically about the safety and protection footwear sector, what are the challenges it faces in terms of sustainability? First of all, it is worth remembering that in the last century most safety and protection boots were made of very resistant natural resources such as rubber, the extraction of which definitely affects ecosystems. For that reason, in recent decades synthetic materials such as PVC and polyurethane have been explored, which provide high resistance without the intensive use of natural resources. However, these are non-biodegradable materials, so their waste can have a high environmental impact if not handled correctly. The good news is that they can be recycled!

zapatos-de-seguridad-1Croydon safety shoes: a commitment to sustainability

Croydon Colombia is a company with more than 80 years of experience in the research, design and manufacture of industrial footwear of the highest quality. Throughout this long and fruitful journey, we have identified many opportunities to offer our customers the best innovation-quality-price ratio in the market. For that reason, we decided that, in order to continue offering the best product to our customers, we had to implement a commitment to environmental protection, both philosophically and practically. Here are the ways in which our safety and protection shoes are part of a production model that is compatible with sustainability:

1. Resistant, durable and recyclable:

Croydon safety and protection shoes are made of PVC, a highly resistant and durable material. If the footwear lasts over time and is not easily damaged, then it does not need to be constantly replaced. This means shorter consumption cycles and less waste. In addition, PVC is a material that can be recycled, if both consumers and companies handle waste correctly.

2. Croydon recycling program

However, it is not enough to simply make industrial boots from recyclable materials, because if the waste is not handled correctly, it can end up in a landfill and end up polluting the environment. For this reason, we have made a commitment to take charge of the production chain of our PVC boots. What does this mean and what does our PVC recycling program consist of? The post-consumer program developed by Croydon Colombia aims to continue guaranteeing that our products meet high quality standards and are certified by international standards. This is why we seek to collect our plastic boots in order to recycle them and contribute to the care of the environment in Colombia. So far, we have recovered more than 52,635 kilograms of material and more than 33,266 pairs of plastic boots, avoiding decomposition and open burning, which generate negative impacts on the environment and people’s health. For our program to work, we encourage our customers to participate by giving them a discount when they turn in their used PVC boots and make a new purchase with Croydon. Both our line of Workman safety boots and our protective bootsLa Titan, La Macha, La Machita, La Feminela and La Tiffany –can be part of our post-consumer program.

3. Carbon Neutral

At Croydon Colombia, we are committed to reducing CO2 emissions, as we know that this is one of the great challenges facing the fashion and footwear industry in terms of sustainability. We have measured our Carbon Footprint (1,458 tons of CO2 equivalent) and have reduced it as much as possible. In addition, we have offset our emissions by purchasing carbon credits that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, forest resources, and environmental care in Colombia, thus obtaining the Carbon Neutral certification granted by ICONTEC. We are the first Colombian footwear factory to achieve this certification and in this way we have demonstrated our commitment to sustainability. In addition, we have undertaken a Sustainability Plan that includes both the measurement of our Carbon Footprint and the reduction of emissions, responsible compensation and the implementation of circular economy and recycling programs.

4. Education and awareness

At Croydon Colombia, we are aware of our role as leaders in the safety and protection footwear industry. This is why we know that we can play an important role in educating consumers about the importance of choosing sustainable shoes and promoting responsible practices, so we have made an effort to disseminate information, both on our blog and on social media, about the materials used, manufacturing processes and recycling options available. By raising awareness about sustainability, we encourage a change of mindset and more responsible consumption – we can all help take care of our planet and our future!
